We love seafood and usually eat fish once a week, alternating between cod and salmon. This orange maple glazed salmon recipe is one of our favorite ways to prepare salmon. It’s sweet from the maple syrup but also tangy from the orange – such a good combination. Pair it with rice or potatoes and your choice of vegetables and you’ve got a complete meal. We hope you’ll agree this maple glazed salmon is an easy entree that delivers a lot of flavor!
What You’ll Need
- Salmon – We like and use fresh unfrozen salmon. The salmon doesn’t have to be exactly one pound as cuts are usually not exact.
- Orange
- Maple syrup – One time I only had corn syrup and not maple syrup so I tried it and surprisingly, it was still really tasty! So if that’s all you have, go ahead and substitute it.
- Soy sauce
- Minced garlic – I used pre-minced garlic but feel free to use fresh garlic.
- Garlic powder
- Salt
- Flour
- Water
- Casserole/baking dish – Try to use a size that fits the fillet just right or is not much larger than it so that the fish marinates well in the sauce.
- Small frying pan
Let’s Get to Cooking
Orange Maple Glazed Salmon
- Make the marinade
You can use a separate bowl to make the marinade, but I’m all about using and washing as few things as possible so I just mix the marinade in my baking dish. Zest about half an orange (be careful of your fingers and knuckles when zesting) and then juice the whole orange into the dish. Add the syrup, soy sauce, minced garlic, garlic powder, and salt and mix all together.
- Marinate
Put the salmon in the marinade and flip it to coat both sides. Marinate in the fridge for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Bake
Bake the salmon until fish flakes easily, about 20 minutes. This time can vary a little bit based on the size and thickness of your fillet. If your fillet is very thick, you may need to bake it for longer.
- Make the glaze
We’re going to reduce and thicken the sauce to make the glaze. I love how with this recipe, the initial marinade easily becomes the glaze.
When the salmon is almost done, mix the flour and water in a small bowl. Once the salmon is done, plate the salmon and pour the remaining sauce in a small frying pan on low-medium heat. Add the flour mixture to the sauce and simmer for about 3-4 minutes stirring constantly. Reduce down to your desired thickness keeping in mind the sauce will thicken a little more once it’s taken off the heat and cools. - Eat and enjoy!
We cut the 1lb salmon fillet in half for 2 servings of tasty orange maple glaze salmon and love to pair it with asparagus. Follow it up with our s’mores brownies for dessert and our bellies are super happy!
Some Questions You May Have
We haven’t tried this recipe with frozen salmon. Frozen fish tends to feel more tough and dry to us instead of the flaky, moist deliciousness that we love so we stick to fresh salmon.
You totally can, but it’s also a preference thing. I don’t like to, but my boyfriend loves it.
Tips and Tricks I Learned
Be careful when making the glaze to not under or over reduce it. I accidentally cooked it too long once and the sauce gets very clumpy and unattractive (albeit still tasty). However, you need to cook it long enough so you’re not eating or tasting raw flour.
